Plus (+) / Minus (–) Notation

For ratings from AA to CCC, a plus (+) or minus (–) sign may be added to indicate relative standing within the same rating category, with “+” indicating a position closer to the higher rating and “–” indicating a position closer to the lower rating.
The plus/minus designation forms part of the rating.

Rating Outlook

The “Rating Outlook” represents the opinion of Rating and Investment Information, Inc. (R&I) regarding the medium-term direction of an issuer credit rating and insurance claims-paying ability.

Rating Outlooks are classified as “Positive,” “Negative,” “Stable,” or “Developing.”
A “Positive” or “Negative” outlook does not indicate an advance notice that the rating symbol will be changed.

When the outlook is neither positive nor negative, it is assessed as “Stable.”
However, depending on circumstances, the rating symbol may be changed without a change in the Rating Outlook.

When any of the outcomes—positive, negative, or stable—is possible, R&I may assign a “Developing” outlook on a limited basis.

In cases where an issuer credit rating or insurance claims-paying ability is rated “CCC” or below, a Rating Outlook may not be assigned.

In addition, during the period from “Rating Monitor” designation to “Rating Monitor” resolution, a Rating Outlook will not be indicated.

No outlook is indicated during the period from the start of a "Rating Monitor" until its removal.
